Pugs have been popular in Europe and Asia for centuries. At one point in history, some Chinese emperors were so attached to these cute little dogs that they were assigned their own human body guards.
They were also treated like royalty when they were imported to Europe, sometime around the 16th century. The nobility was so fond of pugs that when portraits were commissioned, these dogs were seated on their master or mistress’s lap.
Pugs also got to ride in carriages, right up front with the coachmen. Oftentimes, they wore little coachmen outfits, because, let’s face it, these comical-looking pets look even funnier when they’re dressed in costume.
