We love our dogs. But some of their habits are a little hard to live with.
One behavior that drives dog owners crazy is poop eating, a condition known as coprophagia. I don’t have to explain why this is distasteful. If your dog is doing this, no doubt you’re searching for ways to make him stop. Just so you know, there are supplements designed to discourage poop eating.
If you notice your dog eating his feces, the first thing you should do is check with your vet. That’s because your pet may have an underlying metabolic condition. Also, you’ll want to rule out nutritional deficiencies. If your vet determines this is behavioral, then you can work on correcting this bad habit.
One online vet suggested putting hot sauce made from habanero peppers on the feces. She said this will taste unpleasant, but cause your dog no harm. (However, it’s a good idea to run this by your own vet, something I always encourage my readers to do before using a natural remedy.)
You may already own some habanero sauce, which means you won’t have to buy anything. With any luck, this is enough to break the cycle of coprophagia. However, this will also require a little effort. You’d need to be available to deploy the hot sauce after your dog “does his business.” If you work, and your dog stays outdoors, in a fenced-in yard for part of the day, this approach may not be practical.
How Do I Get My Dog to Stop Eating Feces?
However, it’s also possible to give your dog a natural remedy that will discourage him from consuming his poop. This is a dietary supplement designed for dogs. It contains natural glutamic acid, which makes the feces taste bitter. Glutamic acid is an amino acid. Although this may not work for all dogs, it might be worth a try if this is a stubborn problem that can’t be otherwise resolved.
